Lulu Miller wraps a memoir of a troubled time in her life around a biography of the persistent researcher and scientist named David Starr Jordan. If I had known that before reading this book, I would have said that it sounds like a combination that wouldn’t make for good reading. But I would have been very wrong. Lulu’s father is a scientist and researcher, and also an atheist who believes that the meaning of life is that there is no meaning of life. Lulu makes the mistake of asking her father about this as a young girl, and her father makes the mistake of telling her what he truly thinks. It is this early knowledge that life is full of chaos and lacking in meaning that Lulu attributes to troubles she got into as a young woman, including a suicide attempt. Irex by Carl Rackman Irex is the debut novel of indie author Carl Rackman. It is a moody, slow burn adventure and mystery story that's heavy on atmospherics and character. The book, a well crafted historical fiction, takes its inspiration from the true story of the 1890 wreck of the Irex, a steel hulled sailing freighter, at the Isle of Wight. Six lives were lost including that of the captain. (You can learn more about the actual wreck here or here .) The action in the book moves back and forth between the unfolding events onboard the Irex that lead up to the wreck, and the secret danger and intrigue surrounding the inquest afterwards. The Power of Geography: Ten Maps That Reveal the Future of Our World by Tim Marshall Reading Tim Marshall’s The Power of Geography while the Russians are invading Ukraine has been an interesting experience. The sequel to The Prisoners of Geography (which I admit I haven’t read) this book explores the geopolitics of eight countries, a region, and outer space. It’s broken into 10 chapters, each focused on one country or region. In each chapter there’s a summary of the history and an overview of the geography of the area. With those two out of the way Marshall then explores and assesses the potential geopolitical ambitions of the countries, keeping their history and geography in mind. In the first few lines of the Introduction Marshall lays out his world view and defines the premise that underlies his geopolitical analyses. He asserts that the world order that defined the Cold War is but a distant memory, and we are headed back to a Great Powers rivalry, with the “minor players” joc
